Review of Cujo (1983) by Orlando D — 26 Jan 2013
It seem like Hollywood in the early eighties and nineties was releasing movies based on a Stephen King novel some were perfection(Shawshank Redemption, Stand by Me)to the dreadful(Graveyard Shift)Cujo could have been a downright terrible movie, but it works.
The movie has an effective Dee Wallace(E.T.) as mother to Danny Pintauro(of Who's The Boss? fame.)They are trapped inside their broke down car in the middle of summer, what's keeping them in their car is a rabid St.
Bernard named Cujo, it becomes a fight for survival for Wallace and Pintauro. Director Lewis Teague(Alligator)keeps the tension going from when Cujo gets bitten by a bat til it's final confrontation with Cujo and Wallace and the subplot involving Wallace's infeditlies with the loacal carpenter(Christopher Stone)and her husband(Daniel Hugh Kelly)knowing the truth of her relationship works because the characters are well-rounded and believeable.
Cinematography by Jan de Bont(Twister)gives the film tight close-ups and really gives the film that thrill it needed. This is still a very good movie that still holds up quite well.
