Review of Cujo (1983) by Zachary M — 04 Jul 2016
They say dogs are man's best friend, well this reminded me of why I'm a cat person. As someone who was attacked by a dog at a very young age, there is something deeply cemented in me to fear dogs. So being trapped in a broken car on a hot day(s) and having a large rabid beast waiting outside is a bit of nightmare, just a bit.
However, despite the great set up, I really couldn't be too invested in this film. Maybe because the characters aren't the most likeable, they're not, but I think it's more than that. The film just seems to be nothing special in the realm of stranded horror films. It's a fine little piece, but with so many films out there with the same premise done much better; The Shallows, Night of the Living Dead, and Dog Soldiers, it just seems like this doesn't have enough to rise above the crowd.
At least this character can boost something those others can't. It created a term for a bad or evil dog that will live forever in pop culture. When people think of evil canines, they'll think of the name Cujo.
So cheers on that one mate, you've gotten your role in pop culture and it's here to stay.
