Review of Crumb (1995) by Paul P — 17 Dec 2011
Robert Crumb has so many fascinating elements to his life. His artwork, his outlook on life, his childhood, his family, the process of creating his art, the wide range of opinions on him(genius, misogynist, pervert or all of the above) and how closely his art mirrors his own life.
But none of it would've been possible without Terry Zwigoff being close enough to Crumb to let him get filmed during this entire process. The guy doesn't even sign autographs for his most die hard fans.
This documentary is a near miracle. Zwigoff edits all this fascinating footage to perfection, it never drags and it never becomes overkill. It shows Crumb as a seriously complicated man who has some severe issues and through his art has come out semi-normal.
