Review of Crooklyn (1994) by Justin T — 19 Sep 2011
While the film does have heart, Spike Lee's sentimentality about his 1970's Brooklyn upbringing seems too redundant for such a powerful filmmaker. Lee's intentions are admirable, in crafting a film around a subject that is rarely ever looked at in Hollywood: the role of the young black female and the constrictions put upon them by society to conform.
However, Lee never takes this anywhere meaningful and ultimately succumbs to conforming to the typical tropes and melodrama of a coming-of-age story.
