Review of Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) by Matthew K — 11 Apr 2009
Revolutionary at the time and still impressive now, given it's age. The monster is the star of the flick, as it looks pretty decent and they actually made it act like an animal would. Instead of being some evil creature, it just wants to survive, attacks those it's threatened by, and attempts odd things with creatures it doesn't understand.
If this is remade (which it is), the creature will lose all these qualities and become a simple aquatic killer. But here, you get an almost evolutionary idealism of why it's doing what it's doing. Which is impressive.
Too bad you can't say the same for the humans. Other than Julie Adams, there isn't a single memorable human in this movie. They always make poor decision and the dialog is straight up laughable. I would blame the age but honestly I think it wouldn't have impressed me then either.
But it's worth watching for the unique description and filming of the monster. Some beautiful camera work too on the directors part.
