Review of Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) by Lovro H — 13 May 2015
I'll admit I wasn't very interested in this movie because I'm not a big fan of water oriented movies, but this was quite a cool monster movie! The 50's & 60's were all about monster movies (Godzilla, The Brain, giant ants, spiders etc.
etc.) and this one is about an underwater creature. The creature costume is great and here's a fun fact which makes the movie even more interesting! The man behind the costume, Ben Chapman, had to hold his breat for up to 4 minutes under the water in the suit to film some of the scenes! That's insane! That being said, the underwater scenes are great and innovative for the time being.
The story is okay, though there is never an explanation for why does the creature exist, where did it come from or anything about the creature at all, which I found a bit dissapointing. The characters are okay, but Julie Adams' character was literally just there screaming.
All in all, an impressive monster movie with some weak characters, but is very interesting and is a must-see for horror fans!
