Review of Cool World (1992) by Brian C — 28 Jan 2009
While this may not be a great movie story or acting wise, visually, it is very unique, creative, and original. The use of 2D cardboard cut outs to represent the mixture of a 2D and a 3D world was stylish and certainly interesting... reminded me of the minimalist way the Star Trek (Original Series) Episode "Spectre of the Gun" was done.
I'll admit that the animation could've been fitted into the live action could've been a little more seamless- the animation seems to "float" a bit off the background film. And the acting was a little stiffer than I would've liked- but I do recognize the difficulty of acting in a scene with nothing actually there (a situation that the advent of CGI has helped to minimize).
Overall, it's a good example of the evolution of animation/live action combination... and how to draw a really hot cartoon character...
