Review of Cool World (1992) by Todd A — 23 Aug 2014
Believe me when I say this: I wanted to like Cool World so badly, but I could not. I thought the movie was very poorly thought out, it had a very confusing story, it was filled with plot-holes and the characters had no clear objectives except for Holli Would who's objective was the clearest: she wanted to be real.
Yet despite the fact that this movie was very bad I could tell that there was a really good film noir story here it's just that the people who wrote this just couldn't get it down on paper. The animation was not that great and the cool world was not "cool".
Unless your deffinition of cool is creepy and disturbing then yeah it's totally "cool". And The Cool World just looked like a warped and twisted version of what Toontown and downtown LA would look like combined.
I liked what Ralph Bakshi did with some of the animations except for one scene when (for some reason) there were animations going across the screen for no reason. But other than that it were really clever.
But that's about all Cool World had going for it. I wanted to like this just to spite the critics and everyone else who didn't like it, but I couldn't like something that was as bad as this.
And I wish I could recommend this movie even if you're bored, but Cool World is not even worth seeing even if you are bored. Don't see this movie. It's not worth the headache.
