Review of Conviction (2010) by Tom R — 20 Aug 2011
Conviction is an inspirational film about never giving up... you've seen this movie before, but rooting for a crusader of justice does not get old so long as the story is well told. It's kind of like watching a modern Changeling but the characters have accents from The Fighter (why, Melissa Leo is in this movie too).
The film covers Betty Anne Waters' (Hilary Swank) struggle to free her convicted brother (Sam Rockwell) from prison. She goes to law school to help him, but she's a mother of two and has bills to pay.
.. now that's struggle. It has an impressive cast (Swank, Rockwell, Leo, Minnie Driver, Juliette Lewis), all of whom are believable as their characters. I'm not going to say Conviction is original in this day and age considering all of the inspirational true story films, but it is a well made, well told one that had me gripped from the start.
