Review of Confessions of a Superhero (2007) by Seth M — 10 Jul 2009
Once again, I really enjoyed this documentary because the makers knew their subjects and they presented some very interesting, very humorous, very depressing characters. These are real people, but they feel as if they are a part of a great comedy screenplay. Good or bad, they're not. This is their lives.
The only thing I didn't enjoy about this is the filmmakers obvious favoritism. "Superman" was obviously their favorite subject while "The Incredible Hulk" was their least. It sucks, too, because I was really interested in Joe McQueen who dressed like the Hulk. Perhaps it was because he had the most success with acting out of the four? I dunno, but this is my biggest complaint. There's also a point where a Batman performer gets arrested, but they never make it clear if it was their subject or another Batman. They show the news footage and then there's "Batman" talking about his job as a security officer on movie sets. It's kind of confusing while you're watching.
Besides that, this is a very fun look into the fucked up lives of Hollywood street performers. My favorite part is the air of mystery the makers left about some of the subjects. Is Chris really Sandy Dennis' son? Did Max really murder people in his past? The true answers never surface and it makes it ever so interesting.
