Review of The Tree of Life (2011) by Seth M — 23 Jan 2016
Speechless. Of the way too many movies I've watched, only 2001: A Space Odyssey can compare to the size, scope and profound ambition that this movie possess. In the beginning, we see a child has been lost.
Then, through incredible imagery, the movie spans time and space to the birth of our universe and life itself. It also spans the life of the eldest son, as played by Sean Penn, reflecting on his youth, his lost brother, and his love/hate relationship with his father.
This movie will prove overwhelming for many, but it will hit home for others. The way Malick portrays the kids at play, and their observations of their parents relationship, them witnessing their parents fighting, only hearing mumbles of the argument.
..it's brilliant and real to life. This is clearly a close to home, spiritual reflection for Malick who grew up in Waco, Texas, which is where this movie took place. I've never been a big Malick fan but this is truly a masterpiece.
Beautiful imagery, acting, and concept. The kind of movie that will stay with you and make you wonder.
