Review of Columbus Day (2008) by Alysia V — 25 Mar 2009
Val Kilmer used to be one of my favorite actors but as of the past several years, the movie's he's been in have been less than sub-par. When I saw he was going to be in a movie, that used to mean I'd rush to the theatre to see it but now when I see him on a movie cover, I hesitate and think to myself, "why am I even bothering renting this?" but for some reason, I still want to have hope that he'll make a come-back and star in something amazing.
But, he still hasn't...This movie was slightly better than I expected it to be and at least I didn't feel the urge to fast-forward it and/or stop it completely. I watched the entire thing and was mildly entertained.
Kind of funny how nearly the entire movie is shot in one location. The little boy in this movie was good and definitely added a little something special. More than a suspense, heist or action flick (which is what I expected it to be) it's a fairly slow moving story of a man trying to reforge the relationships with loved ones that he's hurt in the past-trying to make amends in a way.
I couldn't understand why a wanted man would decide to stay in one park the entire time rather than be on the move and eventually decide on a meeting spot to make "the exchange." I guess because this film wanted him to form a relationship with the little boy, alone in the park.
And I was also frustrated that we never got to see what it was he was carrying in that case of his throughout the entire movie. So, did this movie spark something inside of me and make me to be, once again, a believer in Val Kilmer? Not really.
But was it at least worth watching once? Sure.
