Review of Cold in July (2014) by Amilcar A — 31 May 2014
Texas noir is a fantastic genre. Much like Florida and swamp noir, there is something exotic and at the same time truly American about these movies. The combination of darkness, heat and shitty diners makes these films grossly appealing. At the same time, it's hard to imagine some of these places are driving distance from Apple Stores and world class universities.
Cold in July is unpredictable, extremely violent and the last shoot out matches up with the best of them. The coldness with which the movie ends is simply staggering.
I'm not sure how I never heard about this movie until a few weeks ago but it's great. The acting is stellar, the settings are perfect and the short role played by Don Johnson is excellent.
It's truly unfortunate such great movies don't get the coverage and exposure they deserve. Compared to most summer fare this is a must see movie that no one will actually pay to see.
