Review of Coffee and Cigarettes (1987) by Sunay S — 28 Oct 2008
One would think that its such a simple concept to write something on that you can't make a film out of it, yet its made so brilliantly. I think the common theme in all the vignettes apart from the obvious stuff is miscommunication.
Benigni has language problems, the Elvis interpretation, anything Iggy says is offensive, Isaac unable to understand that there are no problems, the jealousy factor in cousins, jack's self indulgence in tesla when Meg is better informed than he is and on and on.
Ultimately when the people have nothing to talk about they mingle about how coffee and cigarettes are a great combination or that nicotine will kill you. Some acts do drag a little but then thats the point.
How we can go on and go over coffee and cigarettes with nothing to talk about.
