Review of Code 46 (2003) by John D — 23 Sep 2007
Although this film is science fiction, it really has very little plot and focuses almost entirely on its characters. And while I do enjoy a plot-heavy, fantasy-like sci-fi, this realistic feeling, love-story sci-fi was just as satisfying. Very similar to Tarkovsky's Solaris, Code 46 is more about a relationship than anything. I really find myself unsatisfied with love stories where the central love relationship is an adulterous one, but something about Code 46 felt very different. I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll stop discussion on this topic there, but if you are like me in regards to adultery, don't necessarily avoid this movie.
Both Robbins and Morton are great in this film. Strangely enough, though, their on-screen chemistry was weaker than their seperate-screen chemistry. I felt their love more in the scenes where they were apart than when they were actually together. I don't really understand it, but it's true. Also excellent was the cinematography. There were numerous excellent shots, my favorite being the strobe light, dance club scene. It was great to look at. All in all, this is a character heavy science-fiction film that I hope everyone gives a chance.
