Review of Code 46 (2003) by Dennis H — 01 Nov 2010
The plot of the movie is really interesting and it is good to see a science fiction film that explores more the drama of the human condition and uses science and technology just as a background. This does not implies that "Code 46" is an excellent film, it is good and thoughtful, but it is also very slow, too slow at times.
In some regards, I think the film would have worked better with a shorter length or maybe they needed a more dynamic approach to the story and an edgier direction and editing. There are a lot of subtexts within the film.
I love the fact that they tried to recreate almost a new language (English with a great influence from Spanish, indicating what might actually happen in the future. Also there were some French words in the language's melting pot).
I appreciated this element of the film, but a broader audience might get lost and don't understand many words that are important in the dialogues. The biotechnology discourse is address in the story in a way that it's intertwined with very mind bending, psychological and ethical issues.
There are some good sequences and there is a love scene that is one of the most weird and tragic I have seen in a film. "Code 46" is not a film for everyone, and it does not aspire o be. This is one of those films that is better when one reflects upon it and thinks about it, than when one is actually watching it, but anyways it deserves a second viewing.
