Review of Cocaine Bear (2023) by Compi24 — 05 Mar 2023
While I don't think it entirely lives up to the implied hilarity brought about by its title, "Cocaine Bear" definitely finds director Elizabeth Banks at the helm of her strongest directorial effort to date, as well as its cast in prime fun-loving fashion.
I think where "Cocaine Bear" wanders astray for me is in its efforts to sustain such a plurality of story. There's at least four different narrative tracts in play here and I really think all the juggling makes for diminished returns in each and every emotional payoff that occurs throughout.
Perhaps if maybe one of these storylines was cut, we'd be able to spend more time with the other three, thus making the eventual resolutions more impactful? In any event, the maulings and gore are guiltily sufficient entertainment enough.
Also, it's great to see Ray Liotta again — if, even for one of the last times.
