Review of Cloverfield (2008) by Renzo V — 15 Jan 2014
"GIANT CREATURE TRASHES NEW YORK".
- Presented as found footage 'Cloverfield' is a 2008 sci-fi monster movie produced by J.J. Abrams (Lost). The storyline is comparable to 'Godzilla' and the recent 'Pacific Rim'; a giant monster attacks a metropolis (New York). I have nothing against the idea of found footage, but it really bothered me during the first twenty minutes of the film. Certainly not the best I've seen, but it was entertaining and the monster looks awesome. Seek shelter because something has found us...
Jason Hawkins and his girlfriend Lilly are giving a farewell party in their New York loft for Jason's brother Rob, who will be moving to Japan. They've asked their friend Hud to film the goodbye messages from all of the guests with a hand-held video camera. Also attending the party is Rob's ex-girlfriend Beth, to whom he recently broke up with. During the festivities an apparent earthquake strikes. Panic sets in as everyone runs out of the building where they see the head of the Statue of Liberty flying through the street. It's no earthquake, but an enormous creature attacking New York. Will the friends make it out of the city alive?
