Review of Cloverfield (2008) by Christopher L — 04 Mar 2016
Going in you need to know that that if you think this movie is gonna have a great story with good character development then you found the wrong movie. I think you need to have low expectations and that's it.
As a movie designed to make you feel as the 3rd person watching everything unfolds through the eyes of the camera it succeeds very well. I myself am not fond of found footage movies but this did a good job of keeping me entertained.
I love the fact that it feels big and it takes part in a small part of New York( Manhattan I think if I remember). I mean the scope is big and I love the fact also that you're actually following these characters.
you're running with them , you're climbing up the stairs to reach the top it feels real. I love the camera work in this as well. Unlike other found footage films, say for example the camera work in the paranormal activity movies, where the camera is in one room and you're watching everything, but does it feel like you're part of the movie.
Cloverfield you're going everywhere with them and that's what I love about it. I also like the creature design it reminds me a lot of Godzilla not how it looks but rather the scope of it and how big it feels.
What I didn't like about the spam was the characters. Like I said there's no character development in this movie at the beginning the acting to me just didn't feel real until the does a The disaster started happening.
There are decisions by the characters in this film that just make me think twice and I feel that if I were in that same position I would have not done that and and because of that it doesn't feel real.
For example the main character goes off to try and save his ex-girlfriend and his friends follow him whereas I feel that if that was in real life I think they would've just left Temon gone to safety and set of following him.
Another thing I didn't like was that at the beginning they show you cut footage of the main character and his ex-girlfriend being together. So off the bat you already know that OK these guys had a history and other non-longer together but they keep beating you over the head of it by going back to the cut footage.
That I suppose is supposed to connect everything with the ending with the two of them being together as they're bombing New York and again I guess at that point I didn't really care about them.
Despite a A week plot and weak characters this movie was good and I enjoyed as what it was. And that is a found footage film. I.
