Review of City of the Living Dead (1980) by Ernie T — 05 Oct 2010
Going into this as a fan of Fulci's Zombi 2, I was expecting your usual zombie film. Pleasantly this film focuses more on atmosphere and other weird shit in lieu of standard slackjaw scares.
Unfortunately the film is a mixture of goods and bads. The goods include: music and sound effects, lighting in final scenes, special effects, and some genuinely unsettling moments. Sadly the bads seem to overwhelm it: wooden acting, confusing plot and pacing, a few major plotholes, the zombies doing most of their work offscreen, and the worst ending I've seen in a very long time.
If you are a fan of gore, supernatural zombies (think more "Evil Dead" than "Dawn of the Dead"), and the band Goblin (they do good horror scores) then I recommend checking this out. If you are looking for a great horror flick that you will walk away from feeling like it was time well spent, there are much better titles out there.
