Review of City of Life and Death (2009) by James K — 31 Aug 2010
Lu has directed a magnificent masterpiece here, directed and shot with pristine thought and beauty, it is a work of art. Subject wise however this is very difficult film to watch, extremely harrowing as it documents the Japanese conquest of Nanking and the atrocities that went on.
What makes it so special though is the director accomplishes this without being sentimental or judgmental in his work, it is simply an insightful and brutal documentation of a piece of history that reminds us of the treachery of mankind as well as its beauty and love for each other in its surviva.
