Review of City Lights (1931) by Stefanos T — 11 Dec 2010
Immortal Chaplin classic,...! Convinced that speech would mar the beauty of cinema, its greates mime exponent agonized over the introduction of sound technology and determined to ignore it,against all advice.
Thanks God he did!!! It begins with an uproarious skewering of pomp and formality,it ends with one of the most famous and potent last shot in movie history! Chaplin's masterwork tells the story of the Little Tramp's love for blind flower girl.
His gentle wooing of the girl and his determination to restore her sight propel him into a variety of jobs that go awry - like the memorable "fixed" boxing match. Captivating, with Chaplin mixing slapstick and sentiment in a winning combination.
Eloquent, moving, and funny. One of the real, landmark greats!
