Review of Cinema Paradiso (1988) by Mohamed F — 18 Jul 2010
A tribute to the beauty of cinema, and to the strong impact it had on the lives of people, with a nostalgic sense for the cinema of the first half of the 20th century.
Cinema Paradiso must have a special place in the hearts of all filmmakers and film buffs alike, a celebration for the passion of cinema with over the top sentimentality and nostalgia that's easy to feel by all the audiences.
Though the movie isn't technically impressive, and the script wasn't tight enough with some loose ends in the story, yet the emotions it delivered and the highly memorable scenes it contained, all with a sublime soundtrack by the fantastic Ennio Morricone, and some great compositions by the director, but with a slight sense of detachment because of the influence of Italian neo-realism which actually took away from my enjoyment.
Does it rank among the greatest movies of all time?
It probably comes at the tail of the list, and it only makes the list because of what it means to me as a filmmaker.
