Review of Chungking Express (1994) by Kyle F — 02 Aug 2008
Another stunning film from Wong Kar-Wai. In this movie we follow the lives of two love-struck police officers who search for love and meaning in their lives.
While the stories feel a bit disjointed and leave the viewer with rather ambiguous endings (I personally liked the second story better than the first, but neither one was done poorly), it was a pleasure to watch the characters develop and cope with life in their separate ways.
Like his other films, this one was shot and edited very cleanly. Other than some of the blurred action segments (which take place in the first story), everything felt very smooth and in place. The direction seemed to have changed from the first story to the second; the first using shaky camera movement and spur of the moment chase scenes, while the latter seemed to focus more on smooth camera movement and looking into the police officer's past. Once again Wong Kar-Wai shows his mastery of setting the mood in each scene. Although the film is predominantly melancholy, it is quite beautiful, lively and filled with an underlying sense of hope for the future.
