Review of Chungking Express (1994) by Caque A — 26 Sep 2008
"Chungking Express" is two films rolled into one, two boy-meets-girl stories separated by 0.01 cm that bump into each other a little before midpoint never to connect again, except thematically.
Shot in the French Nouvelle Vague style, with handheld cameras, lots of jump cuts and a Cantonese Jean Seberg on acid, this was not a film I expected to like, and don't really understand why I did. Perhaps it was its offbeat, whimsical tone, or its Blade Runner-like urban environment, with its multilingual dialogue, its cosmopolitan soundrack, its cityscapes drowning in neon lights, pouring rain and the clutter of our consumer culture.
Whatever the reason, it left me with a smile on my face.
