Review of Chungking Express (1994) by P D — 15 Jun 2011
Chungking Express is a composite of two stories about policemen in Hong Kong with the recurring theme that life and relationships are random. It's like a light-hearted French drama with better music and less smoking.
The plot is secondary to the dialogue and acting, so not recommended for viewers who require a beginning, middle and end or fixate on plot holes. The dialogue is a creative masterpiece ranging from the expiration date of canned pineapple to soap to chef salads.
The randomness that dictates the direction of the characters was also a key component of the production process as the film was made in six weeks, with the script being written in the morning and filmed later that evening.
Hats off to Wong Kar-wai for taking a chance and allowing these memorable characters and scenes to come to life.
