Review of Child's Play (1993) by Chad B — 13 Oct 2013
In the 1980's, there was a lot of doll toys with some examples being Cabbage Patch Kids, My Buddy, My Pet Monster, and Teddy Ruxpin. There were movies about the dolls that promoted them and the dolls promoted the movies.
In 1988, a movie called Child's Play changed the way people thought about dolls. Child's Play stars Catherine Hicks, Chris Sarandron, Alex Vincent, and Brad Dourif and the movie is directed by Tom Holland who also directed Fright Night.
The basic plot of the movie is that this robber named Charles Lee Ray is shot by a cop and dies. However, he transfers his soul into a Good Guy Doll so he wouldn't die. He then is bought by a woman named Karen and she takes him back to her apartment to her son Andy.
Andy then thinks that the doll is talking him and Karen doesn't believe him. When her friend is mysteriously killed, Karen and the cop that killed Charles Lee Ray have to figure out who the killer is and stop him from transferring his soul into Andy.
The plot is very original and it features great suspense, very good acting, and superb special effects. Child's Play was one of the first horror movies I ever watched as a kid and ever since has been one of my favorite horror movies.
The acting in the movie is really good. Catherine Hicks does a great job as the main lead Karen Barclay and yes she was in Star Trek 4 The Voyage Home. Chris Sarandon also does a good job as the main cop in this movie.
Alex Vincent also does a very good job as the kid named Andy especially for a child actor. The actor everyone always talks about is Brad Dourif as the doll Chucky. Like Robert Englund is Freddy Krueger, Brad Dourif is Chucky and no one will ever top him.
Chucky is a memorable slasher villain and is right up there with Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger for best Slasher movie villains. The movie has a lot of suspense in the beginning. Although we know it's the doll, you might think that Andy is imagining it and you don't see Chucky move until 40 minutes in.
The suspense is one of the best things about this movie. The kills in the movie are pretty good although in one scene Chucky kills a person with shock therapy and in real life you can't kill people with shock therapy.
I really have no problems with this movie. One thing I like is the acting like I said earlier with my favorite actor being Brad Dourif. I also really like the suspense in the movie like how you don't see the doll move or talk.
I love the special effects in the movie. Chucky is all animatronic and sometimes a midget in a suit. I love the special effects in the movie and they are some of the best I've ever seen. I also really like the idea of a killer doll and it seems really creepy in my opinion.
I really have no problems although the movie does have some dumb parts and it has some plotholes, but I really don't care because I love this movie. I highly recommend this movie to horror fans and slasher fans.
The movie has grown a cult following and I'm glad because it's a underrated movie and I'm glad more people are seeing it. I'll review the sequels later by the way so stay tuned.
