Review of Child's Play (1993) by Noah S — 06 Oct 2018
I wouldn't really call the movie scary and it's strange to think that Chucky being alive was supposed to be a twist when it first came out. Were scary doll movies not a thing when this movie first came out? I don't think I would've suspected that Andy is the killer if I saw this movie back in 1988 even without seeing the trailer that casually implies the doll's sentience.
Though I would call this movie cheesy in all the right ways leading to a highly enjoyable above-average movie. I laughed a few times, the animatronic work is impressive for 1988 and the performances are actually pretty good.
It is mildly thrilling and Child's Play is still very competently made but I wouldn't consider it a horror movie. I didn't feel like I was suffering from watching it but I dread to think what the sequels might be like, especially when it just gave up and went to comedy.
One day, I'll find out.
