Review of Che: Part One (2008) by Jose P — 10 Aug 2009
An excellent, powerful, gritty and real portrayal of Che Guevara's role in the Cuban revolution. Soderbergh uses excellent narrative devices, and a not-quite linear delivery alongside his genius cematographic style to great effect.
The film is also expertly cast, with Del Toro a convincing Che, thanks to his great intensity and complex performance. Unfortunately, as a film, Che Part One fails on one point - it does not feel in anyway complete, with the ending rather weak and forced.
It is clearly a longer film sliced in half, and does not work as a stand-alone entity. Of course, the two parts were intended as one film, and if viewed in this way deserve a higher rating. Still, an excellent achievement, even alone.
