Review of Cemetery Junction (2010) by Dave L — 03 May 2011
I thought I would be sitting here telling you what a pile of rubbish this is. That Gervais's ego knows no bounds and that he's a pretentious, talentless, egotistical arse. Much of that about Gervais is true but fortunately Cemetery Junction is actually really rather good. It's well thought out, well executed, well acted and competently directed. Much of this, I suspect is more down to Steve Merchant's influence than Ricki Gervais's. I can just imagine Gervais on set squeaking, jumping around and making funny noises like a child with ADHD, while Merchant desperately tries to direct.
What we end up with then is a rather smart looking and funny film, that is essential just full of Gervais's school boy humour of nob gags, but it makes you laugh none the less. Gervais does play the same character he does in every film i.e himself and the end is slightly predictable, but its still enjoyable and rather charming.
