A beautiful, funny and sweet natured film.

Having read a vast number of reviews for it, initially I was put off. It was described as "not very funny". I saw it by chance the other night, when I'd come home from the pub. I decided that I might as well give it a go and watched it. Right from the off the movie appealed to me.

It's story, set in 1970's working class England was quite the opposite to the usual depressing, "oh, we might as well go and top ourselves" films. It is a coming of age film, where Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant (writers / Directors) have left their ironic, satirical comedy behind to make this beautiful film.

To say it was not funny is downright wrong; there are light hearted jokes peppered in and around the film.

I felt the movie deserved an honest and unbiased critique, having read some of the harsh criticisms below.

If you are a fan of cinema, good music (the film has a great soundtrack) and do not take yourself too seriously, you'll really like this film. Just turn it on and lose yourself into the magical story land that is Reading.
