Review of Cassandra's Dream (2007) by Mark Y — 03 Aug 2008
Another intriguing exploration by Allen concerning right and wrong. "Cassandra's Dream" is like a morality play peopled with types. The Corrupted Brother Finding Himself, The Wife Who Loves and Stays Loyal, The Ruthless Older Relation. The Man Easily Seduced. This helps to not take this film too literally, although the characters are certainly painfully human and alive.
This also helps to not let the many contrivances of the story be bothersome. Why do two people break into a house so ineptly? Are two young people really in love, or just using each other? The smooth patness of the ending etc.
I very much like how this movie criticizes the inhumanity and amoralism that people use to justify their actions. And I like many of the small moments throughout the film that make it distinctive and more rich.
