Review of Carnival of Souls (1962) by Stef I — 14 May 2011
I love the hell out of this movie, and there's definitely some nostalgia attached to it because I saw it very young. It's not perfect by any means but every flaw manages to contribute to it's beauty.
A scene that always struck me is when Mary goes momentarily def and the only sound is of her footfalls. The sounds are very obviously dubbed in, barely matching up with movement of her feet, and something about it just makes me melt, I can't even explain it.
Love the pipe organ soundtrack too, GAWD, it's so good! To get the full effect of this movie I'd suggest watching it alone, in the dark, with a pot of coffee and maybe some toast. And don't expect a masterpiece, just be patient and let it unfold, it's not about the movie, it's about the atmosphere and the way you feel when it's over.
No other movie has the feeling of this one, it's sort of addictive.
