Review of Carnival of Souls (1962) by Urban M — 23 Sep 2016
This is the kind of movie you'd stumble on at midnight on some obscure cable station, be really freaked out by, and spend the rest of the next day convincing first others and then yourself that it wasn't just a particularly weird nightmare.
Psychologically drenched and atmospheric, Carnival of Souls makes up for its faults- which are partially, but not entirely due to its non-existent budget- with an unnerving score, great use of sets, on-point editing, camerawork and lighting, all paired with building on fears the viewer can relate to, unsettling rather than scaring, with fine to great performances.
The ghouls dancing at the carnival will stay etched in my mind for ever.
