Review of Caramel (2007) by Mikael K — 03 Jun 2009
A good example of how to make an honest chick flick without turning everything into something overly sentimental and fluffy. â??Caramelâ?? is saturated with warm imagery, beautiful music and overall femininity.
Whatâ??s really cool is that it doesnâ??t present the feminine as something superficial and neurotic as so many western cultural products do. The film carries a lot of emotional substance, and it doesnâ??t forget to address the problematic position of women both in Lebanon and elsewhere as well.
The constraints the state and culture place on women is shown in not too obvious but very telling ways, always keeping the focus on the interesting characters.
