Review of Captain Corelli's Mandolin (2001) by Adrienne S — 10 Sep 2004
There are so many things that I have issue with when it comes to this movie! The first is the accents. While Bale continues to amaze me with his talent for mastering complex accents, Nicolas Cage and The Actor that plays penelope Cruz' Father are just dreadful with their accents.
I didn't even know that Cage was supposed to be italian until I was told by the script that he represented Italy! The second issue with this movie was the relationships between the characters. First I was really enjoying the relationship with Bale and Cruz, then Bale goes off to war and Cruz falls for the first "pretty face" that comes along.
In accordance with that, however, I found it a little difficult that someone of Cruz' beauty would be with someone like Cage after she had been with someone like Bale! Maybe it's just me but Cage just doesn't engage me the way the Bale does.
I was just really disappointed in the results of her adultery. I wanted her to pay for what she did to him! The last comment was on the fighting sequences. While I acknowledge that violence can be really useful when used properly, I found that the fighting in the last part of the movie grew tiresome and tedious to watch.
I actually fast forwarded through that part out of boredom. All in all...sorry Bale...but I wasn't happy with the end results of this movie.
