The story of a Spanish war Veteran in the 17th Century... or something like that. The story is an epic saga, following the adventures of Alatriste and his sidekick Inigo, there's a fair bit of stoushing with swords and pistols, a lot of which is apparently pointless, but I think that is the point.
The futility of war and the frailty of life... sigh.
