Review of Calvaire (2005) by Luke H — 11 Jul 2007
A very interesting addition to the sort of backwoods psycho genre in that the disturbing content is not the focus (and maybe I'm jaded, but it was nothing I hadn't seen before and really didn't faze me much).
The build-up to the actual horror is viscous with tension and repressed rage, and the relationship between Bartel and Marc is somehow sweet and sick at the same time. The over-the-top, half-baked Deliverance/Texas Chainsaw conclusion is a somewhat weak finale, though the last scene pays off and concludes things with incredible style and(surprisingly) heart.
Well worth seeing.
