Review of Calvaire (2005) by Sheri S — 24 Nov 2007
The hillbillies in the bar scene is outstandingly disturbing. A lot of horror films have been coming from France of late most of them only mediocre, so when I went into watching this I was going to take it for all it's worth.
And extremely overwhelmed by it's weirdness and disturbing hillbillies I was. The film looks really good and becomes very exciting after the first act where we have to listen to a lot of dialogue.
But then we are invited to a twisted european version of Misery(as if misery wasn't disturbing enough hey??) and hillbillies in the wilderness film. This is very downbeat, so it mayl not appeal to a mainstream audience, but if your a fan of films that revolve around character's who becomes stuck in the wilderness and then rely on strangers for help get this now.
.. Think 'Misery' meets 'The Backwoods'....Excellent stuff..
