Starring: Laurent Lucas, Jackie Berroyer, Phiippe Nahon And Jean-Luc Couchard.

Year Released: 2006.

While I traditionally put films that are actually old in this section, Calvaire is a special exception. While the film debuted in 2006, it has gotten next to no recognition. So basically the reason it is even in Golden Oldies, is so that I can spread the word about this awesome film. To talk about the film I'm going to go over some adjectives that describe the film. Calvaire is disturbing. It is frightening. It is suspenseful. It is depraved. It is unnatural. It is amazingly awesome! While Calvaire is supremely horrifying and disturbing it is the originality of the story and complexity of the characters that really gives value to a film that would otherwise just by a romp lacking depth. The film is brilliantly filmed, with some really amazing scenes of the French countryside. Along with some really great scenes that are homages to classic horror films. In fact there was a scene that was filmed exactly like the dinner scene from the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The acting is great! Laurent Lucas does a more than admirable job as the singer turned woman (you'll find out why). Jackie Berroyer as the absolutely depraved innkeeper, Bartel, is brilliantly frightening. All of the supporting cast is definitely top notch, especially Philippe Nahon. But there is something I need to warn all of those who see this movie: This film can be very hard to watch. There is a particular rape scene that comes to mind, along with a scene of a haircut. I really can't stress this enough though; If your are squeamish in any way, do not watch Calvaire! But if you're not, and like a good old fashioned horror film, than I really can't recommend this film any higher!
