Review of Calvaire (2005) by Hrodland C — 09 Apr 2008
Take Misery and Deliverance and combine them with a foreign art film: you get something like The Ordeal (Calvaire). When I went in watching it, I treated like a typical horror movie. Not until the final scene did I realize I had watched something completely different.
Foolish me. I would really like to watch this movie again. It seems to have been told in three distinct parts: Pre-Bartel, Bartel, and Post-Bartel. Each one is terrifying in its own way. Good movie. I can't wait to watch it again with someone else.
If there's one thing I can take away from it right now, it's to never trust people from small villages. Ever.
