Review of Calvaire (2005) by Danny H — 01 Apr 2009
This is the first Belgian movie I've ever seen, and I must say the Belgian townscape makes the perfect setting for a horror movie. Too bad this descended too much into art film cliche and failed to connect on any real level.
Not to say it didn't have its moments. There was one scene that seemed to capture everyone's attention, where a guy starts playing a dissonant waltz in a dark, filthy pub and everyone there pairs up and starts doing some sort of zombie waltz mosh.
But I was still hoping for something more harrowing. Those Belgians should stick to making waffles and beer.
