Review of Cake (2014) by Prentice S — 27 Sep 2015
"Cake" is one of theose movies that's really only good because one famous actor has a terrific turn as one character. In "Cake," that's Jennifer Aniston as Claire, a clinically depressed alcoholic and drug addict.
Her turn is quite good, but the story doesn't give her room to move. She's stuck in this position, while no one to play off of or even really to help her. When she does manager to turn her life around, I genuinely took it with a grain of salt.
She seemed too far gone most of the movie to really come back from her depression. It's a good role for Aniston, but the movie needed a little more work to really make a dent in the awards season.
