Review of Cake (2014) by Movie G — 15 Jul 2017
Contrary to the opinion in the "critics' consensus", there is a depth to this film -.
and a warmth - though these are not easily apparent. Aniston's character is beset by such a level of chronic pain that she seeks to shield herself from the greater pains through high levels of self-medication and by utilising provocative, shock-inducing words and actions to fend off those who would care for her. All the performances are credible, accomplished and absorbing. I found myself flinching on several occasions. Humour leavens the film. The writing is adroit and the cinematography - the composition of scenes especially - skillful. Aniston is impeccable; and the craft evident in Adriana Barraza 's beautifully nuanced performance is of the highest order.
