Review of Cake (2014) by Jason W — 28 Feb 2018
Quick Summary: A woman tries to understand why a woman in her support group committed suicide, while discovering more about herself along the way.
His and Her Consensus.
Why you might want to watch it:
You like Jennifer Aniston but have always wanted to see her more dramatic chops.
You don't mind (or even prefer) movies that tackle tougher subject matter- in this case, suicide.
You're down with movies that don't have to spell everything out and leave some things up to your interpretation.
Skip if:
You tend to shy away from tougher themes and are looking for a happier movie tonight.
A brief sex scene, no nudity.
Recommend: Our favorite part of this film is how it tries (and mostly succeeds) in tackling a subject often shied away from in more broad reaching cinema. Jennifer Aniston's character contemplates why a friend of hers committed suicide. The best part is not everything is just laid out up front or spelled out in annoying voice over monologue. You're left to discover much of what's in her mind and why she's doing what she's doing. Aniston does a fine job here, different than what we've seen elsewhere from her. So if you're up from some deeper stuff tonight, here's a worthwhile offering.
