Review of Burnt Offerings (1976) by Liisa H — 01 May 2011
A family (Oliver Reed, Karen Black, Lee Montgomery) on vacation rents an old Victorian mansion from an insidious brother-&-sister duo, the Allardyces (Burgess Meredith and Eileen Heckart), unknowing of the evil forces that are present there.
After a series of bizarre events occurs, including the unpleasantly unsettling death of Black's aunt (Bette Davis), the family realizes the house rejuvenates itself after each strange happening. The lengthy sequence with Davis's decline as the house slowly saps her lifeforce is truly haunting and horrifying.
An interesting and original horror film with some memorably-frightening scenes, fabulous acting by the cast, and tight direction by "Dark Shadows"'s Dan Curtis.
