Review of Broken Blossoms or The Yellow Man and the Girl (1919) by Irvin C — 01 Oct 2008
It may not be as big a spectacle as "Birth of a Nation" or "Intolerance" but D.W. Griffiths' tragic love story between a Chinese man and a young abused girl contains much of the same artistry those films had.
The rather racist practice of having a Caucasian man play Asian aside, the film is pretty effective and moving (and politically correct for it's time). Lillian Gish, in particular, gives one of her best performances in this one.
