Review of Broken Blossoms or The Yellow Man and the Girl (1919) by Ryan M — 13 Jan 2010
A very engaging silent. Wonderfully directed. It doesn't quite go far enough in its interracial love story - Griffith makes sure to note that Cheng and Lucy's love was not consummated - and it's full of racial caricature and "Oriental" mystical hokum, but what else would you expect from a film from 1919? It was at least a step in the right direction.
