Review of Brick (2006) by Darryl K — 18 Nov 2010
High schoolers talking like grizzled, fast-talking 1940 well-experienced detectives - sounds like a great comedy. But this is the latest (impossible to take serious) drama, titled Brick. This film has the worst choice in direction that I've ever seen.
High schoolers are already melodramatic enough as it is without turning them into pulpy noir caricatures. On top of that the screenplay feels like a rough draft, with no exposition, clunky dialog, and a convoluted story.
It's too bad cuz I like Joseph Gordon-Levitt, but you know when a formula doesn't work when you're not supposed to laugh, but you just can't help grinning at - the teenage "drug lord" wearing a high collar cape and carrying a cane looking like some Victorian-mastermind wanna-be, or - when a high school student is talking to their principle like a grizzled detective talking to the city commissioner or.
..the list is endless. Well, at least the titled is apt, since they definitely threw a brick with this one.
