Review of Brick (2006) by Sean D — 26 Oct 2012
This movie shouldn't have worked. The idea behind it shouldn't have been anything special, and yet Rian Johnson does incredible things with it.
Brenden is a high schooler who heard from his ex-girlfriend asking him desperately for help. He starts trying to help her, and soon finds out she was killed. He than becomes detective Brendan and tries to find her killer, and why.
As I said before, this movie shouldn't have worked at all. It should have been terrible. It's a Film Noir in a High School setting. The whole idea should be disgustingly blasphemous. But it's truly brilliant, and refreshingly unique. Not an original idea per say, but an idea done in a brilliantly original and unique way.
It would get 4.5 stars, but the R rating made no sense. Disturbia was more violent and disturbing than Brick .
Other than that, an incredible film. Flawless performances and incredble direction.
Well done, Rian Johnson. Well done.
